Innerspring Mattresses: Springs for Snoozing
The modern mattress has come a long way from the days of being filled with wool, feathers, and a variety of other natural materials. Nowadays, mattresses are constructed using the traditional innerspring system, latex foam, and visco-elastic memory foam. With so many different types to choose from, searching for the perfect mattress can keep you awake at night.
Let’s take a closer look at the innerspring mattress, which is the most common mattress in the bedding industry. Providing the proper spinal alignment while you sleep, innerspring mattresses consist of a spring zone and a comfort layer. Underneath the ticking—the heavy cloth that encases the mattress—are the comfort layers that cushion your body as you sleep.
There are four different spring designs used in innerspring mattresses:

Coil Construction
The overall thickness of the coil is called the gauge, and is the determining factor for support and firmness. The higher the gauge number, the thicker and stronger the wire used to make the coil. In contrast, a mattress coil rated at a higher number will be thinner and weaker. Confused? Here’s a chart to sort this all out:

Unlike other mattress manufacturers, Serta’s individually wrapped (Marshall) coil mattresses use advanced twice-tempered steel for increased durability. Double-heat tempering is the manufacturing process of heating and cooling the coils twice to ensure they retain their proper shape over time.
Springs in your Sleep
As a guideline, the minimum number of coils in a mattress should be 300 for a Full, 375 for a Queen, and 450 for a King. Although it might seem like the more springs in a mattress the more support you’ll have, coil count is not nearly as critical today as it once was. The combination of coil count and gauge along with the construction of the coils is a more important factor in determining the overall support and comfort level of the mattress.
