TomTom – How to Get New Maps
You may have never wondered how road construction affects the digital maps inside your GPS device as you count orange barrels by the hundreds while traveling less than half the speed limit. Once the asphalt trucks and steamrollers have come and gone, what’s left is a new road that will be in the next map update available for your TomTom. A map update from TomTom also includes the latest points of interest (POI), safety camera locations, and other improvements.
But how do you get those new maps and updates inside your TomTom? First, you need to find out what map version you have and compare that to the latest download available. Since 15 percent of roads change every year, don’t let your TomTom hit a dead-end. Keep it updated. Otherwise, you might take a turn for the worse.
STEP 1 – On TomTom’s homepage, www.tomtom.com, click the Support tab on the toolbar at the top of the page.
STEP 2 – An Online Help area will open under the Find your answer heading with a list of the most commonly asked questions. A search window is available if your question isn’t listed. Click the How do I check the version of my application and map?
STEP 3 – Your answer will be displayed with two different methods to find out your map’s version. Click Method 1: On the device.
STEP 4 – If your device isn’t already activated, please do so now. In the navigation view, touch the screen in the bottom right-hand corner of the status bar.
STEP 5 – You are now at a status summary screen. In the lower right-hand corner, you will see your current application version. Touch the screen on the version button to view your current map version.
STEP 6 – Your version number is 800-1727 and the map currently installed is ‘USA & Canada.
STEP 7 – Now that you know your map’s version number, you’ll need to see if you’ve already got the current version or if it’s time for an update. On TomTom’s homepage, click the Maps link on the Quick links menu located on the left-hand side of the page to take you to the Get New Maps area.
STEP 8 – Select your device model from the drop-down menu. For this example, we’ve selected TomTom’s ONE 3rd Edition.
STEP 9 – Now it is time to select the map you want to download. Only the maps available for the device you selected in the previous step will display.
STEP 10 – Press the Add to cart button to place the map in your shopping cart.
STEP 11 – If you need additional maps besides the one in you’ve just placed in your cart, click Back to the store. If you’re ready to purchase and download, click Proceed to checkout to make your purchase and then download your new map.
OTHER INFORMATION
- In order to successfully download a new map, ensure you accept the free upgrade to TomTom HOME (version 2.1 or higher) and update the software on your device when prompted.
- Maps downloaded on www.tomtom.com can only be used if you already own TomTom products.
- Due to the size of the maps available for downloading, TomTom recommends using a broadband internet connection.
- An additional SD memory card might be required depending on the size of the map you download.
