Listen carefully because speakers are usually the deciding factor in the overall sound quality of your system.

Shop all home audio speakers here.

Although there are other factors in play, speakers are usually the deciding factor in the overall sound quality of your system, so it’s well worth the time to listen to several models/brands before making a decision. In fact, personal preference is probably the biggest factor in speaker selection, followed by speaker type (e.g., bookshelf, floor standing, etc.) and the components you will use to power your speakers.

SPEAKER LOCATION
Speaker placement configuration is heavily dependent on the size of the room. If you’re renting a small bedroom then a 7.1 home theater system is probably going to be overkill. Take into serious consideration the placement of your speakers because these decisions will have a direct affect on the type of speaker you need and the sound quality you will enjoy.

SPEAKER TYPE
This type of speaker refers more to the cabinetry housing the speaker than the literal type of the speaker itself. For example, a random floor standing speaker might handle 100 watts maximum, while another floor standing speaker of the same cabinet dimensions might handle 500 watts. In a nutshell, the size and design of the speaker’s cabinetry doesn’t necessarily equate to high quality sound.

Bookshelf
Just as the name implies, these speakers are designed to be placed onto closed or open bookshelves.

Klipsch Bookshelf Surround Speaker with Tractrix® Horns
(Model No: KS2)

Center Channel
This speaker is part of a home theater system and its purpose is to keep sound anchored to the on-screen action. When you watch a DVD or Blu-ray movie, the center channel delivers more than 50 percent of the soundtrack, including virtually all of the dialogue, and many of the sound effects.

(Model No: CSRBLK)

Floor Standing
While they do take up floor space, floor standing speakers generally have the best overall sound because the speakers and enclosures are performance matched.

(Model No: 194648)

In-wall & Outdoor
In-wall speakers have good sound and the grills can be painted to match the walls. Outdoor speakers are often sold individually and can be cosmetically designed to look like a rock to blend in with their surroundings. These speakers can even be used in humid, hot/cold, and in instances where precipitation is present.

(Model No: 191WH)

Multi-speaker Systems
These systems are specifically “bundled” together by the manufacturer for compatibility and functionality. They can consist of a 2.1, 5.1, or 7.1 system and do not include a receiver. This takes all the guesswork out of selecting a center speaker, front speakers, satellite speakers, and a powered bass speaker and hoping they work well together.

(Model No: RM6750)

Subwoofers
The subwoofer plays a crucial role in the surround sound effects you hear by reproducing low-frequency sounds in the 25–180Hz range.

(Model No: PSW10)

Wireless
These speakers deliver the same crisp audio and amazing clarity as their wired counterparts, but without unsightly wires. They’re compatible with most electronic devices, allowing you to seamlessly transfer audio content from your stereo, computer and more with the built-in stereo audio cable.

A universal remote is a smart way to consolidate the management and operation of your entire home entertainment system.

With the expansion of home entertainment going way beyond just your television and a DVD player, a sudden accumulation of remote controls have taken place. Let’s do the math:

HDTV + Cable Box + Home Theater Receiver + Blu-ray Player + VCR = 5 Remote Controls

Because virtually every home audio/video component is factory equipped with its own remote control, a properly equipped and configured universal model may solve your component confusion woes. Not to mention the confusion of which remote controls the volume when you’re watching TV, enjoying a Blu-ray movie, or enjoying a VCR movie from the 1980s. And that’s if you can even find all five remote controls when you need them. The solution to all this is to opt for a universal remote control.

After a little programming, you can have all of your system’s components linked up through a single remote control. A universal remote is a smart way to consolidate the operation and management of your entire home entertainment system into a single, convenient controller.

FEATURES, FUNCTIONS, BENEFITS
Here are some of the features, functions, and benefits to a universal remote control.

Full-color Touch Screen
You’ll enjoy easy, one-touch access to any entertainment activity.

Macros
A common feature on today’s more advanced universal remotes is user-programmable macro controls. For example, let’s say you want to watch a Blu-ray Disc on your HDTV through your home theater system. Instead of individually turning on each component and setting it to the proper mode, simply press the button you have configured with your “Play Blu-ray” macro. The remote then sends the necessary commands to power up your television, Blu-ray Disc player, and home theater receiver.

Ergonomic Design
Ensure the remote fits comfortably in your hand — making it easier to use.

IR / RF
Ensure your remote is capable of operating through walls, ceilings, and floors. This way you don’t have to aim or port at the system. You can just adjust the TV volume in the kitchen or mute the system from your bedroom.

Many remotes, universal or factory models, rely on infrared (IR) light signals to communication with your home entertainment components. This requires a direct line of sight between the remote control and the receiving hardware. However, some remotes utilize radio frequency (RF) signals, which have the ability to transmit through walls, ceilings, floors, and the closable cabinet furniture.

Acoustic Research Universal Remote Control RF Extender
(Model No: ARRE433B)

Rechargeable
Some remotes are rechargeable so you will never run out of battery power while using your remote. Simply set the remote into its base station when not in use.

Buttons
Look for sculpted, backlit buttons. Backlit buttons in logical zones allow you to find the right channel — even in the dark.

Online Setup
Some remotes come with guided online setup. Connect your remote to your PC and you’re guided through every step.

Compatibility
The most devices and brands a remote is compatible with, the more peace of mind you’ll have knowing if you add a new component tomorrow that you won’t have to be a new remote. Remotes such as the Logitech Harmony One are compatible with 225,000+ devices and has support for 5,000+ brands.

Receivers are the brains and brawn behind home theater.

Your speakers and your television do exactly what they’re told by the receiver — the brains and brawn behind home theater. The brains come from the ability to separate incoming audio and video digital signals from multiple sources and distribute them to the correct channel. The brawn comes from the ability to dramatically increase the playback volume of the sounds you hear (and feel) without changing the characteristics of the signal.

The receiver is your amplifier, your tuner (radio), your iPod® docking station, and your signal processor for HD audio and video. You won’t have to spend a lot of money to get something compatible with your speakers and your television.

Sony 735-Watt Home Theater A/V Receiver 7.1-Channel
(Model No: STRDH710)

You could own the best speakers and HDTV in the business but without the smarts and the power of a receiver, you have nothing. You’re worse off than watching your old cathode-ray tube television and listening to those tiny speakers located at the base of the cabinet.

When choosing your home theater receiver, there are several specifications you’ll need to understand such as watts and decibels. But, don’t purchase your receiver based only on a watts-per-channel rating as that is only part of the story.

The home theater receiver is known by many different names, but they all refer back to the same thing. That’s as long as you’re talking about a receiver capable of at least 5.1 channels of digital processing and amplification for home theater.

Home Theater Receiver

Audio/Visual Receiver

Surround Sound Receiver

Dolby Digital/DTS Receiver

Most home theater receivers have the capability of providing the upscaling or upconversion of both digital and analog signals to display on high-definition televisions (HDTV). Upscaling is a mathematical process which matches the pixel count of the output signal to the physical pixel count of your HDTV’s resolution set at 1280×720 (720p), 1920×1080 (1080i), or 1920×1080 (1080p).

Although the images are upscaled, they are not true high-definition images even if the upscaled images were derived from a DVD. The images are simply better than the original source which results in better detail and color consistency.

WHAT DOES A RECEIVER DO?
The receiver acts as a control station and processor for every single input and output signal of your home theater system. You don’t see or hear anything unless the digital signal was received in and then transferred out of your receiver. The receiver receives these digital and analog signals, processes them, and distributes them as separate audio and video channels. The home theater receiver also functions as an AM/FM tuner and docking station for iPods® (video/audio).

As a control station, the home theater receiver performs the duties of three pieces of hardware in one compact unit:

Tuner
Receives all the standard AM/FM stations. Some units have the capability to broadcast XM/Sirius satellite radio (premium service), high-definition (HD) radio, and/or Internet radio.

Preamp
Separately controls the audio and video digital signals for distribution to the speakers and to your television.

Amplifier
Distributes multi-channel (e.g., 5.1, 6.1, 7.1) digital audio surround sound signals and power to the speakers.

Ensure your home system has the brains and the brawn to send thundering audio to your speakers and a rainbow of colors to you HDTV. A poor receiver will take away everything that defines home theater. Look at all the capabilities and the specifications sheet and don’t just focus on one feature — such as watts per channel.

With vast increases in performance and expanding features, now is the right time to watch Blu-ray.

Immediately following the release of the first titles on June 20, 2006, the Blu-ray Disc shook the entertainment world to its core and it doesn’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon. Since the inception of the Blu-ray Disc player, it has matured and the market has been steadily expanding with many advances in performance including stellar HD picture quality, faster disc-handling capabilities, and robust Web features like integrated Wi-Fi and audio/video streaming.

JVC Blu-ray Disc™ Player – Model: XVBP11

BASIC BENEFITS
The benefits of Blu-ray over DVD are vast. Probably the biggest difference is in pixels with traditional DVDs containing fewer than 350,000 pixels, but a 1080p Blu-ray Disc can boast more than two million pixels! You already have an HDTV and cables that can support HD images, add the perfect complement to your ultimate entertainment Mecca — a Blu-ray Disc player.

LG Network Blu-ray Disc™ Player – Model: BD590

COOL FEATURES
One of the best features of Blu-ray Disc players is their capability to also play DVDs, CDs, MP3 files, and even display JPEG images. Nearly all Blu-ray Disc players house a dual-laser optical pickup mechanism. One laser will be blue (hence the name “Blu-ray”) for playing HD discs and one laser will be red for playing/displaying other media. Just to be certain your BD player has both lasers, read the product packaging or literature provided with the player.

Samsung 3D Blu-ray Disc™ Player – Model: BDC6900

Some of the newest BD players have begun to incorporate multimedia features such as the ability to stream movies, TV shows, and vides directly to your HDTV using Netfix® and YouTube™. If your BD player has this capability, simply connect it to your home broadband network through the built-in 802.11 Wi-Fi connection, Ethernet (wired) port, or USB (wired) port.

BD PROFILES
To learn about Blu-ray player profiles, read out Learn Center article title: “Blu-ray Profiles: Identification & Explanation.”

UP-TO-DATE
Because the technologies involved with Blu-ray improve and change virtually by the month, it is important to keep your player as up-to-date as your Blu-ray Discs. It’s a good idea to regularly check for firmware updates to ensure the latest BDs continue to be compatible with your player.

Sharp AQUOS® Blu-ray Disc™ Player – Model: BDHP24U

Most manufactures (e.g., JVC, LG, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, Toshiba) are making these necessary updates easy to locate and install, and many Internet-connected BD players feature both manual and automatic updating functions.

IS MY DVD COLLECTION OBSOLETE?
The key reason why Blu-ray didn’t shove DVDs off the shelf from day one is title selection. But, after the first 36 months on the market, Blu-ray accumulated 2,500 titles. Oddly enough, that is exactly the reason why some people have not stepped up to BD — the fear of their DVD collection becoming a victim of planned obsolescence.

Sony Blu-ray Disc™ Player – Model: BDPS570

If a Blu-ray Disc player is backward/reverse compatible, your DVD collection will look and sound even better. That’s because most Blu-ray players support upscaling the images of traditional DVDs (480p) to 1080p or 1080i.

The best way to enjoy HDTV is with HD content from cable and satellite television providers.

Let’s face it … HDTV isn’t much without HD content. Other than a Blu-ray Disc, the best places to get HD content are subscriptions services from cable and satellite TV. With eight cable and two satellite providers nationally to choose from, it all comes down to where you live in the United States, your personal preferences, and if you rent or own your residence.

Cable and satellite television falls into the subscription-based services category and is also known as pay television or premium television. Premium channels are part of subscription-based television and are offered in “packages.” For example, DIRECTV offers the Encore channels along with the Starz channels in its “Starz Super Pack.” DIRECTV also offers The Movie Channel, Flix, and the Sundance Channel along with Showtime in its “SHOWTIME UNLIMITED” package.

Most premium channels air unedited, commercial-free movies, as well as original shows and sporting events. With the exception of live sporting events, most premium channels display ratings bumpers before each airing, which contains the film/episode rating. Additional features in the program include closed captioning and whether the program is being broadcast in stereo. Content descriptors have also been included in the program to give warning to the type of content.

SATELLITE PROVIDERS

DIRECTV
DIRECTV was the first entertainment service in the U.S. to deliver all digital-quality, multi-channel TV programming to an 18-inch satellite dish. Today, DIRECTV is the nation’s leading digital multi-channel television service provider.

DISH Network
Headquartered in Englewood, Colo., EchoStar Communications Corporation is a public company with approximately 20,000 employees. The company and its subsidiaries deliver Direct Broadcast Satellite (DBS) television products and services to customers worldwide.

CABLE PROVIDERS

Adelphia Communications
The fifth largest cable provider in the U.S., Adelphia Communications provides cable and Internet service to over five million people in over 30 states and Puerto Rico.

Bright House Networks
The company provides cable and Internet service to over two million people in cities including Indianapolis, Central Florida (Orlando / Daytona Beach areas), Tampa Bay area, Lakeland, Birmingham-Hoover area, west suburban Detroit, and Bakersfield. Most of its business is concentrated in Central Florida, where Bright House Networks is the dominant cable system in the Tampa and Orlando TV markets.

Cablevision
With over three million subscribers, Cablevision provides cable, Internet, and phone service to primarily the New York metropolitan area.

Charter Communications
Charter provides cable, Internet, and phone services to over six million people with a strong presence in the Midwest and Ohio Valley areas.

Comcast
Since 2002, Comcast has been the largest cable provider in the U.S. Comcast provides cable, Internet, and phone services to over 20 million people.

Mediacom Communications
The nation’s eighth largest cable and Internet provider, Mediacom offers service to over two million people across 23 states with a main focus on small towns and cities.

Cox Communications

BRAVIA: Color Like No Other!

In 2005, Sony replaced their “LCD WEGA” line of LCD TVs with the BRAVIA moniker which is an acronym for “Resolution Audio Visual Integrated Architecture.” Sony is a longtime leader in entertainment technology and its BRAVIA line of LCD televisions is no different. The BRAVIA line consists of LCD televisions, projection TVs, front projectors, and home theater systems.

The Sony BRAVIA series is dived into three sub-series:

S Series (entry level)

V Series (intermediate)

XBR Series (premium)

S Series
This series is the low-cost option in the BRAVIA lineup. The S Series HDTVs feature 720p screen resolution, rather than full 1080p. They also have a dynamic contrast ratio of 5000:1 rather than 7000:1 like some of higher-end models. Also, the S Series BRAVIA comes in the smaller screen size sizes of 23, 26, 32, 40, and 46 inches (measured diagonally).

V Series
This series consists of the intermediate level BRAIVA HDTVs. There are only two screen sizes in this class: 46 and 46 inches. Both models offer the same screen resolution (1080p) and contrast ratio (7,000:1) as the premium XBR sets but only have two HDMI inputs and use different digital video processing.

There are only two sizes in this class, 40 and 46 inches, and they offer the same resolution (1080p) and contrast ratio (7000:1) as the XBR sets. The difference is that the V series sets only have two HDMI inputs, instead of the XBR’s three, and they use different digital video processing.

XBR Series
This is Sony’s flagship HDTV. It comes is screen sizes of 40, 46, 52 and 70 inches. The XBR offers three HDMI ports, full 1080p resolution, the most advanced digital video processing, and the highest possible contrast and response time. Some of the XBRs also include optional bezels (screen chassis frames) in different colors. The XBR series is sometimes called the “X” series.

The main differences between the XBR2 and the XBR3 are that the newer series has a piano black bezel instead of a silver one, and an 18-month factory warranty rather than the traditional one year warranty.
In September 2007, Sony brought out the XBR4 and XBR5 series of HDTV. The new sets improved on the XBR3 series in many ways, but the most exciting development was a 120Hz frame rate in the display.

The main differences between the XBR4 and XBR5 are in the appearance of the set itself, but they are basically the same set, much like the XBR2 and XBR3 are the same television. The XBR6 improves on all previous XBR televisions in the expected ways (better picture, better contrast, more well-thought-out features).

The XBR7, XBR8, and XBR9 models build upon the success of the previous XBR models by adding the latest technology such as LED backlighting for better contrast, a 240Hz (very high-speed) frame rate to deliver smoother motion, and internet connectivity to enable you to download content from providers such as NetFlix and Amazon.

<storng>BX, EX, NX Series
In 2010, Sony released a new line of BRAVIA HDTV: BX, EX, and NX. This new BRAVIA lines is based on a new iconic Monolithic design and philosophy and a host of revolutionary display technologies. They not only exude aesthetic appeal, but are jam-packed with advanced technologies to provide unparalleled viewing experiences at home.
